Okay, I got tagged twice on this one because I took so long to post (sorry)! This time I was passed the torch by Melissa over at The Traveler’s Lunchbox and then Fatemeh at Gastronomie. Here goes…
- What is your first memory of baking/cooking on your own?
I think I was about eight and I convinced my best friend to help me cook a coursed dinner for our parents. I remember little about the night except that I came down with the chicken pox. Oh, and a vague memory about making pudding from “scratch” (which meant from a box, but not the instant kind). I covered the hot pan with plastic wrap and it melted into the pudding.
- Who had the most influence on your cooking?
Definitely my parents. They were always entertaining and throwing elaborate themed parties… so I inherited the bug.
- Do you have an old photo as “evidence” of an early exposure to the culinary world?
I laughed when I saw Melissa’s photo because I have a similar one with me stuffing my face with spaghetti, but I couldn’t find it. What I did end up finding was equally funny. Obviously, I didn’t like greens at a young age, but I loved the drink. I guess some things never change.
- Mageiricophobia – do you suffer from any cooking phobia, a dish that makes your palms sweat?
I’m a very bad baker.
- What are your most valued or used kitchen gadgets and/or what was the biggest letdown?
I know this is uninspired and tame, but it really is a toss up between my chef’s knife and my cuisinart. I like to chop.
- Name some funny or weird food combinations/dishes you really like – and probably no one else does!?
How about tempura bacon? I also really like ground beef and oyster sauce wrapped in a tortilla. Hey that’s FUSION!
- What are the three eatables or dishes you simply don’t want to live without?
Bacon, prosciutto and duck confit
Any question you missed in this meme, that you would have loved to answer? Well then, feel free to add one!
- Your favorite ice-cream… Homemade mango ice cream that’s fresh out of the ice cream maker
- You will-
probably-definitely never eat… Balut - Any signs that this passion is going slightly over the edge and may need intervention? I have fantasies about getting fired from my job so I can spend more time eating and cooking. But that’s not really obsessive. Is it?
- What’s on your all-time foodie dream list? (gadgets, destinations, restaurants, dishes to try…) This changes a lot, but this month it’s: a doufeu, a thermapen and a dinner at French Laundry.
- I tag: Uh, no one. I’m so late on this I think everyone I know has already been tagged. However, if you would like to be tagged, let me know and I will happily oblige.
UPDATE: I have tagged Kevin over at Bacon Press. You’re it!
Sooo cute! But please don’t tell me that’s a beer you’re drinking! I actually have a photo that I didn’t post that has me at about six months old clutching a bottle of Anchor Steam. Somehow throws my parents in a whole new light… And what on earth is balut? It made me queasy just looking at the photo.
Melissa, I’m afraid it is a beer. A Budweiser to be precise. Mom didn’t want me to post it, but I thought it was just too funny. Plus it was just a sip. And, come on, it was the SEVENTIES!
Balut is a Filipino delicacy that is basically a partially developed duck. It’s one of the few things that I don’t think I could ever bring myself to eat.

I could have gone my whole life without seeing balut. At least now, no one can spring it on me during my travels . . .
Oooh. Sorry Brandon. Maybe I should put a warning on that link…
Oh those photos are so darn cute!
Hey, Meg, you were so adorable. Awwww. But I bet you’re smokin’ hot now! Yeah, baby!
Oh, hey, wait, I’m married.
Thats so cute…wanting to cook dinner for your parents…but when you are 8 ??!! You definitely were inspired early in life :)
Thanks AugustusGloop!
Eddie, you crack me up.
Nupur, I couldn’t remember exactly how old I was, so I did kind of guess, but I was definitely VERY young and the undertaking was quite ambitious…
Balut??? Oh, Meg…. you don’t know what you’re missing:-D
hehe the drinking and after drinking pictures made me laugh!
I hear Balut goes well with beer, but of course, I’d have to be pretty well lit to eat a whole one (I’ve “tasted” a piece of one).
Also, feeling ONCE again like the last kid picked for the kickball team, can you invite me to the meme? Please?
k.
Stef! You’ve had balut? How was it???
Gwenda, I thought they were funny too—I just couldn’t resist posting them!
Kevin, What did it taste like??
Consider yourself tagged!
Thanks for the tag Meg!
So…balut…
Well, to be honest, I could only stand to taste just the outside of the egg. Seeing as I was at work and a Filipino co-worker brought one in and not a six-pack of Schlitz was anywhere to be found, I kinda wussed out on going the full distance. Basically, the part I tried tasted like a normal, hard-boiled egg.
However, if you’re ever in the Bay Area, you can spot folks selling them at some of the Farmer’s Markets (particularly UN Plaza and Alameny).
I’d be happy to ship some to you!
k.
Kevin,
That’s funny that you wimped out. I think I would too…
Thanks for the shipping offer, but I really need to pass. I need to do some serious warming up first—like being able to eat those Chinese “1000 year old” eggs my grandma is always munching on!
